KNAW

Research plans submitted to the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) must include a short paragraph on data. 

The KNAW requests researchers to store their research data in a data archive and to make them freely available, unless there are important reasons not to. This is usually done when the dataset is complete, at the latest at the close of the project.

NWO

Research data are mentioned a few times in the general granting regulations of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO):

• NWO is joint owner of the datasets compiled in research funded by NWO.
• The research data collected must be stored and documented in a thorough and accessible manner.
• Databases are made available for use in further scientific research.

For some disciplines these regulations have been worked out in detail: research data from these disciplines must be stored in a data archive and made available for reuse at the end of the project.

This stipulation holds for the NWO medium and NWO large grants for the Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Longitudinal studies and Violence against psychiatric patients.

If a funding request is granted, the researcher must immediately enter into a contract with Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS), a KNAW and NWO institute.

Data management

Researchers who wish to apply for NWO grants need to answer four questions on data management (data management section) in their application. If a funding request is granted, the researcher will write a data management plan. UvA and AUAS researchers can use the UvA or AUAS template in the online tool DMPonline for this. The first version of a data management plan needs to be submitted within four months after approval of the grant. As soon as the data management plan has been approved by NWO, the project can start. The costs for data management can be incorporated into the provisional budget.

ZonMw

ZonMw advises researchers to start planning their research data management during the grant proposal stage.

After being awarded a ZonMw grant application, a researcher has to submit a data management plan. UvA and AUAS researchers can use the UvA or AUAS template in the online tool DMPonline for this. Additionally, information about certain key items has to be given as far as possible.

In the mid-term report, an update of the information about the key items is requested. After the research project has finished, the definitive version of the data management plan and the information about all key items will have to be submitted.

SIA/RAAK

SIA asks researchers to answer four questions about research data management during their application. These four questions are the same questions that NWO asks. The data management plan that researchers fill in after receiving their grant also comes from NWO.

Horizon 2020

Researchers who wish to apply for funding from the European Commission as part of Horizon 2020, are invited to include a paragraph on data management in their project proposal:

• what types of data will the project generate,
• will the data be made accessible for verification and reuse, and if so how,
• how will the data be archived.

From 2017 the Open Research Data Pilot of Horizon 2020 is extended to all research areas. Researchers who take part in the pilot are required to write a data management plan. A first version of the plan must be handed in six months after the start of the project.

The collected data must be stored in a data archive and made available for reuse by others.
