Publisher requirements

Publishers may stipulate that upon publication the data on which your article is based are made available to others for reference.

Data availability policy

A number of journals have a separate  Data Availability or  Data Archiving Policy (DAP). The requirements are generally found on the journal's website.

In general there are three scenarios: 

  • you send your dataset to the publisher and the publisher publishes the dataset online,
  • the publisher asks you to deposit the dataset in a trusted repository and to notify the publisher of the web address, or
  • the publisher asks you to give contact information of yourself or your research group for those who wish to have access to the data. 

The exact requirements to be satisfied are usually listed in the instructions for authors on the journal's website or that of the publisher.
